SEARCHING FOR JOURNAL NAMES

Journal names are included in the "source field" of MEDLINE citations. Below is a citation, with the journal name in bold:

Wagner, R. & Johansen, M. (2000). Applying NIH Protocols for Pediatric Care in the Clinical Setting. JAMA, 765(20), 72-4.

Searching Option #1: Using the Menu Commands

One of the easiest and most direct ways to search for a specific journal name is to use the OVID menu prompts.
Click on   Journal icon, which is located at the top of the search box on the main search page. Then, type in the first few letters or words of the journal title. OVID will present a list of journal titles, from which you can select the one(s) that you want.

Searching Option #2: Using Direct Entry to Bypass Menu Options

Another way to identify journal names or journal titles is to bypass the menu opions and search via direct entry. Using direct entry, you can enter the journal name directly in the "Enter Keyword or Phrase" box:

Format:
journal.so.

The .so. tells the system to search the "source field" of each citation for the journal name that has been entered.

EXAMPLES

  • Format:
    journal.so.
The .so. tells the system to search the "source field" of each citation for the journal name that has been entered.

  • Type in the "Enter Keyword or Phrase" box:
    american journal of public health.so.

  • Type in the "Enter Keyword or Phrase" box:
    circulation.so.

  • Type in the "Enter Keyword or Phrase" box:
(british medical journal or bmj).so. will retrieve the journal using the full name, OR the acronym.

Remember that for each journal title, there may be thousands of articles in the MEDLINE database. So, it's always a good idea to combine your journal name search with some other variable -- a subject (using MeSH), title word(s), text word(s), volume numbers, pages, etc.
