SECTION 4: EVALUATING WEB SITES

OBJECTIVITY

OBJECTIVITY is related to credibility. An objective Web site provides facts, NOT opinions.

When you find Web sites, look for the name of the site and the name of its producers or sponsors. Decide if you can determine the following:

  • Is the point-of-view or agenda of the site producers clearly stated?
  • Is the site merely a "soapbox" for a person's or group's political or social agenda?
  • Is the site objective and free from bias?
  • What are the motivations of the site producers and authors?
  • Do you notice any potential conflicts of interests?

Think about the "Virus Myth" Web site that we saw on the last screen... Was it objective?
