SECTION 3: USING SEARCH ENGINES EFFECTIVELY

META SEARCH ENGINES

META SEARCH ENGINES

  • Do NOT maintain their own databases. Instead, they are middle men or middle agents.

  • Transmit your search topic to several search engines at the same time.

  • Search results represent a combination of results from ALL engines queried.

How does this impact on searching?

  1. Beware: if you enter a complex search, not all of the engines searched may be able to interpret it.

  2. Meta search engines are useful for saving time in searching multiple engines at-once.

  3. Meta search engines are useful for getting an overview of "what's out there".
