SECTION 3: USING SEARCH ENGINES EFFECTIVELY

TRUE SEARCH ENGINES

TRUE SEARCH ENGINES (such as AltaVista® (http://www.altavista.com) or HOTBOT® (http://www.hotbot.com):

  • Are created by machines called spiders.

  • Have bigger databases.

  • Usually generate more hits or larger results.

  • Search their own databases to match your terms to:
    • 1st 20 words in a site
    • 1st 100 words in a site
    • any word in a site

How does this impact on searching?

  1. A True Search Engine database is likely to include millions and millions of Web sites. So, when you enter a word or phrase, you're likely to get LOTS of "hits".

  2. The database may contain all of a Web site -- every word. So, when you enter search words or phrases, the database can match your search terms to any words on a Web site in its database.
