SECTION 3: USING SEARCH ENGINES EFFECTIVELY

TRUE SEARCH ENGINES

A TRUE SEARCH ENGINE, such as AltaVista®, is compiled as a search engine spider or robot visits Web sites.

The spider reads the Web page, then follows links to other pages within the site (this is called being "spidered" or "crawled"). The spider returns to the site on a regular basis to look for changes, and eventually records these changes in its database.

When you use a TRUE search engine, you'll find hits based on whatever is included in the search engine's database. There is very little human input into TRUE search engines, because they're built by the "spider" computer.
