A HYBRID search engine is part TRUE SEARCH ENGINE and part WEB DIRECTORY. HYBRID search engines use "spider" computers to create their databases. People also maintain a directory so that Website producers can submit their sites for review and possible inclusion.
These days, most search engines are HYBRIDS.
