SECTION 3: USING SEARCH ENGINES EFFECTIVELY

WEB DIRECTORIES

WEB DIRECTORIES (such as Yahoo!® (http://dir.yahoo.com):

  • Are created by people.

  • Have smaller databases.

  • Usually result in fewer hits.

  • Include more indexing (i.e., subject lists) and evaluation of each site that is included.

  • Search ONLY in the site description that was submitted when the site was added to the directory’s database.

How does this impact on searching?

  1. When you search a Web Directory, you'll find "hits" based on matches to words in the Site Description.

  2. Because Web Directories are built by humans, their are usually smaller than those that are built by "spider" computers. Because fewer sites are included in a Web Directory database, you'll also usually get fewer "hits" for your topic.
