WEB DIRECTORIES

A WEB DIRECTORY such as Yahoo!® (http://dir.yahoo.com) depends on people for its content, and is built by humans instead of computers.

Web site creators, sponsors, or producers can submit a site description to the Web Directory, hoping that their site will be included in the Directory.

The people who maintain the Directory also evaluate and review Web sites, adding to the Directory those Web sites that they think are valid and legitimate. Directory editors may also write descriptions for the sites that they review.

When you search a Web Directory, you'll find "hits" based on matches to words in the Site Description. Not every word in a site is included -- just the words in the Site Description -- so it's harder to make a match.

Web Directories include only those sites that have been formally reviewed or evaluated for quality and content.
