SECTION 3: USING SEARCH ENGINES EFFECTIVELY

ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES

Let's move further down the Advanced Search features page on the sample screen below. The numbering of advanced search options continues as 5, 6, 7, etc.

5. Language

The majority of Web sites are written in English. But, you can find Web sites in other languages using this option. This may be especially useful for Spanish-language speakers, since more and more Web sites are being written in Spanish.

6. File Format

This is useful if you are looking for a particular kind of resource on the Web -- a slide presentation (PowerPoint), a text file (Word), etc.

7. Date

Every search engine periodically updates the contents of its database. The date can be used to find sites that have been recently updated in the database.

This does NOT mean that the site itself is current. It only means that the search engine's link to that site has updated.

8. Occurrences

This option allows you to specifiy where in the retrieved Web sites your search terms appear. For example, limiting the search to "in the title of the page" means that your search terms will appear in the titles of retrieved Web sites.

Use the "in the title of the page" option alone or in combination with "2. exact phrase" searching for small, precise results.

Although these examples have all been from Google®, the other search engines also offer these Advanced Search features.
