SECTION 3: USING SEARCH ENGINES EFFECTIVELY

"WEB" AND "DIRECTORY" OPTIONS

Look for Web or Directory options.

The Web option will search the search engine's large, computer-generated database. This should generate larger results. The Directory option will search the smaller, hand-picked database of resources for fewer results.

Below is an example from Google®

Click here if you want to open a new browser window to Google®. You can also do a "Bookmark" in Netscape® or add it to your "Favorites" in Internet Explorer® if you want to go back to it later: http://www.google.com).

Notice that we can search the 1. Web to get large retrieval from the database, or we can search the 2. Directory option to get smaller retrieval from the smaller, hand-picked collection of resources in the Directory.

Another example is from AltaVista®.

Click here if you want to open a new browser window to AltaVista®. You can also do a "Bookmark" in Netscape® or add it to your "Favorites" in Internet Explorer® if you want to go back to it later: http://www.altavista.com).

Notice that it also has the 1. Web and 2. Directory options. If we want a comprehensive search, we can use the Web option. If we want a more refined search with fewer results, we can use the Directory option.
