SECTION 2: STRATEGIES FOR LOCATING RELIABLE HIV/AIDS INFORMATION ON THE WEB

ALTERNATIVES TO USING SEARCH ENGINES

Search engines have tremendous value for helping Web users find information. There are millions of documents on the Web, so using a search engine can help you sort through all that information to find what you need.

Later in this tutorial, Section 3 will teach you more about how search engines work, display results, and rank results. Section 3 also provides tips and hints that will help you use search engines more effectively.

Despite the benefits of using a search engine, anyone who has ever used one knows that search results can be sloppy. Relying on search engines to find the right piece of information can be frustrating.

  • Thousands of hits are posted when all you wanted was one good Web site.

  • You can spend hours browsing through search results.

  • Search results may lead to broken links.

  • Search results may lead to bizarre Web sites.

  • Search results do NOT always seem to match the search question.

  • And other frustrations!

When people need information on the Web, they may automatically go to a search engine. This is NOT necessarily the best approach.

Let's talk about some alternatives to using search engines.
