ASKING A FOCUSED QUESTION:

THERAPY QUESTIONS

Therapy problems are questions about what treatment, if any, can be given to a patient, and what outcomes of different treatment options might be.

EXAMPLE

The clinical case:  The patient is a 64 year old postmenopausal woman who wants your advice about hormone replacement therapy. She heard that estrogen can prevent broken bones, but may slightly increase a patient's risk of breast cancer. She especially fears heart disease because her mother died of a heart attack at age 50. She wonders if she should begin taking conjugated estrogens.

The question might be:   What are the associated risks of estrogen replacement therapy in a postmenopausal woman with a family history of heart diseases?

Or, you could ask, Does estrogen replacement therapy with progestins decrease the incidence of heart diseases?
