WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Two workshops are designed to help HIV/AIDS consumers become more effective at identifying, finding, and evaluating relevant HIV/AIDS information on the Web. The workshops can be taken alone, or in-sequence:

Consumer HIV/AIDS Resources on the Web

This core workshop is designed to familiarize beginners with a variety of consumer HIV and AIDS resources on the Boston AIDS Information Outreach Project (BAIOP) Web sites and on MEDLINEplus, a consumer health resource from the National Library of Medicine. Focus will be placed on using Web sites as tools for consumer centered patient care and education. In-class exercises and practice time are included.

Beyond the Basics: Web Information Skills for HIV/AIDS Consumers

The second class is intended for those who have some experience using the Web. The class focuses on understanding and using search engines to their maximum potential, evaluating Web sites effectively and efficiently, and using the Web as a resource for healthcare information. This class will also introduce participants to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed MEDLINE system, which is a Web-based search system that provides free-of-charge access to the biomedical journal literature. Other AIDS-related databases including AIDSDRUGS and AIDSTRIALS are also discussed. In-class exercises and hands-on practice time are included.
