Hardware & Software

The LRC labs and classroom house over 160 IBM-compatible PCs and Macintosh computers with a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software available. See the list below for current holdings. There are an additional PCs and Macintosh computers adjacent to the library's Reference Desk, on the 12th floor of the library.

Printing and Scanning

Each computing area contains 2 IBM scanners and 1 Mac scanner, and 2 laser printers to which all machines are networked. Printing is done using Library copy cards (10 cents per copy).

Color copies are available from Pitney Bowes, located in the basement of the Talbot Building on the Medical Campus.

Computer Assisted Instruction Software

Many of the computer assisted instruction Software programs are installed locally, requiring use from the Learning Resources Lab (LRC). In some cases, the resources are available on the Web to those users who have dialed into the BU campus network. A link is included for resources that are accessible remotely.

  • AMA Freida is an electronic residency-matching program for medical students seeking information on residency programs nationwide. Program allows users to specify program type, location by region, state or city, hospital size, and other variables.
  • BrainStorm, the Interactive Guide to Human NeuroAnatomy, was developed at Stanford University School of Medicine. This program provides review and quiz modules in three sections: Cross Sections -- magnified photographs of stained cross-sections of CNS structures; Gross Dissection -- photographs of dissected brain, brain stem and spinal cord specimens; and Diagrams -- line drawing illustrations of specific structural and functional relationships.

  • Histology Lab Assistant was developed at Temple University School of Medicine to provide atlas, workbook and test bank aids for numerous topics in histology.
  • Interactive Atlas is an interactive atlas of Human Anatomy.
  • IPP Diagnostic
    • Histology VideoReview is a complete, basic review of key topics in human histology. It includes twenty chapters, each covering a specific subject area, as well as a comprehensive image based exam testing students' knowledge of the materials covered. This program also references over 1000 images from the Slice of Life videodisk.
    • Merck Manual TextStack
    • Pathology Quiz Bank is a stack of over 2500 multiple-choice questions for self-testing and evaluation. It also provides feedback on all answers and direct links to the Pathology TextStack.
    • Pathology TextStack contains the complete text, illustrations, diagrams and charts of Robbins Pathological Basis of Disease, 5th edition. Students can browse the text or search for specific information anywhere in this 1400 page text.
    • Pathology VideoIndex presents a detailed index and commentary on more than 1400 images from the Slice of Life videodisk. It also includes the Cued VideoIndex Quiz, an image based quizzing mechanism for quick review of materials in the Video Index.
  • MassCHIP (Massachusetts Community Health Information Profile) is a program developed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. It provides easy access to 18 health status, health outcome, program utilization and demographic data sets. MassCHIP creates reports, charts and maps at various geographic levels with multiple search criteria. (Individual passwords are required.)

  • PC-SAS System is a comprehensive software program for statistical analysis.
  • SPSS is a comprehensive software program for statistical analysis.
  • USMLE 1, 2, 3 study guides and quiz sections for the medical licensing exams, parts 1, 2, and 3

Most of these software programs are installed locally, requiring users to be in the LRC computing lab.
