NIH Public Access Policy

Any peer-reviewed publications arising from NIH-funded research on or after April 7, 2008 must be submitted to the National Library of Medicine's public access repository, PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov). As mandated by the federal government, manuscripts from NIH-funded research will be made publicly available no later than 12 months after publication. Researchers should submit their manuscripts electronically through the NIH Manuscript Submission System at http://www.nihms.nih.gov/.

Additionally, researchers are responsible for notifying publishers that a manuscript is subject to the NIH policy. For more information on this process, please visit the NIH Public Access page at http://publicaccess.nih.gov. The NIH also hosts a number of tutorials on the submission process that can be viewed at http://www.nihms.nih.gov/web-help/index.html.

If you have additional questions, please contact Jane Kinsel at the Office of Research Administration at (617) 638-4600 or the Library's Reference Desk at refquest@bu.edu or (617) 638-4228.

EZproxy Implementation

The Office of Information and Technology and all University libraries are launching a new system called EZproxy that will allow any BUMC or BMC user to access licensed online resources, regardless of where the user is located, simply by logging on using her/his username and Kerberos password.

As of Tuesday, February 19, the electronic resources licensed by the Alumni Medical Library will begin running on a new EZproxy server. After this date, you must have a BU login name and Kerberos password to access the Library's electronic resources.

If you need a Kerberos username and password, send an email to Ron Tate (rtate@bu.edu) from a valid BU or BMC email account. This email must include your first name, last name, email address, and department or school. If you have a BU ID, please include the number in your email as well.

Wiley InterScience Journal Titles Added

We are pleased to announce that the Boston University Medical Center Alumni Medical Library and the Boston University Mugar Memorial Library have jointly purchased access to the Wiley InterScience electronic journal collection. The collection is available to all Boston University, Boston University Medical Center, and Boston Medical Center students, faculty, residents, and staff. The Wiley InterScience collection contains approximately 420 electronic journal titles and expands the Library's online holdings in the areas of medicine, dental medicine, basic sciences, public health, pharmacology, psychiatry and psychology. Access to these journals will be available through BUMC MEDLINE Plus/Ovid and PubMed, as well as through the Medical Library's E-Resources journal collection and the Subject Guides A-Z.

If you have questions about the Wiley InterScience collection, please contact the BUMC Alumni Medical Library Reference desk at refquest@medlib.bu.edu.

Mobile Library Website Launched

When you visit the Alumni Medical Library website with a PDA, you will now be directed to the BUMC Mobile Library. The mobile website provides access to the Library's electronic collections through a simplified non-graphical interface.

Use your handheld device to:

Connect your PDA to the BUMC Wireless Network.

Find free clinical software for your handheld.

For questions or feedback contact Ron Tate at (617) 638-4576 or rtate@bu.edu.

New Resource: VH Dissector

The Library is pleased to announce that BUMC faculty, students and staff now have access to VH Dissector, a virtual dissection tool from Touch of Life Technologies, originally developed by faculty at the University of Colorado using data from the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project. The software recreates and enhances the experience of cadaver dissection by providing access to over 2,000 interactive anatomic structures.

VH Dissector also includes interactive lessons with video supplements, the ability to create custom lecture guides and a tutorial which the Library recommends to new users.

The Library will also be providing workshops on the use of VH Dissector in the coming months.

Set up VH Dissector or contact Ron Tate at (617) 638-4576 or rtate@bu.edu for more information.
